Kong Xiangxi’s house is located in Taigu Normal School on the west side of Boundless Temple in Taigu County. The house faces north and south, 91 meters from east to west, and 69 meters from north to south, with a total area of 6,325 square meters. The house was originally the old residence of Meng Guangyu, a gentleman in Taigu.
The existing buildings of Kong’s house are basically intact, and the general appearance of the East Garden still exists. Generally speaking, it has both the characteristics of northern folk houses and the characteristics of southern gardens. It is a real example of the integration of north and south residences and gardens. The compound has become a cultural tourist attraction.
The existing main courtyard, kitchen courtyard, study courtyard, stage courtyard, Mozhuang courtyard, west garden and partially damaged east garden. It consists of multiple horizontally arranged courtyards, each of which is divided into multiple courtyards along the central axis. The courtyards are separated by bright corridors, buildings or halls. The main buildings all use bucket arches and flying rafters, which are beautiful and generous in shape.
The wooden part is carved with beams and painted buildings, and the powder is piled up with gold, just like a colorful rainbow. There are vertical flower gates, treasure vase gates and octagonal or crescent gates connecting each courtyard, and the partition walls are decorated with windows of various shapes. The courtyards have different shapes and styles, the whole is elegant and pure, the details are exquisite and clear, the width and fierceness are combined, and the shades are appropriate, which looks very harmonious.
The main courtyard is a three-entry courtyard with a magnificent wooden gatehouse, a foyer in the front, open pavilions in the east and west, and an octagonal gate in the east to enter the East First Courtyard to the East Garden. There are two doors in the style of people hanging down, and the hall is in the style of rolling shed. The small doors on both sides of the hall can lead to the study courtyard and the flower viewing hall. There are three official halls on the front of the hall, with hard mountain-style carved main ridges and pillars in front. It is very spacious, with doors in the north and south.
The east chamber is named “Sanyoutang” (Youyou, Youwei, Youshou), and the west chamber is named “Sanduotang” (Duofu, Duoshou, Duonan), both of which are residences for concubines.
After passing the official hall, you can reach the Sanjin Courtyard, which is a courtyard building. The east and west buildings are for female relatives, and the second floor is the “embroidery building” for unmarried women. The south building is the residence of the owner. There is a Baosha in front of the first floor. The original plaque of “Jingjie Pavilion” in Fu Shanshu was hung. On the second floor, there is a plaque with the four characters “Yingzhou style”. The building is gorgeous, with exquisite materials, towering and magnificent. It is the tallest building in the whole courtyard, reflecting the status of the owner.
Chiang Kai-shek lived here in 1934, and later it was occupied by Japanese invaders, Jiang Yan military station, hospital and special police. Comrade Deng Xiaoping visited the house in August 1948.
